S.P. Pulses is based right in the middle of the action at A-4, Krishi Upaj, Mandi Yard in Madanganj. If you’ve ever been to a mandi, you know how it is. There’s dust everywhere and the sound of tractors is constant. We get here very early, usually when it’s still dark out, to get ready for the day’s trade. Our space is filled with big jute bags of pulses like moong and urad. We spend a lot of time checking the grains to make sure they are dry and clean. The floor is concrete and always has a thin layer of grain dust on it. We don't have air conditioning or anything like that, just big open doors to let the air move through. It gets really hot in the summer months, but that’s just part of working in the yard. We have a small wooden cabin where we keep the accounts. The desk is piled high with yellow receipts and old notebooks. Most of the people we deal with are farmers or other traders from around Madanganj. It’s a loud place, full of shouting and haggling, which is how business gets done here. We’ve been in this particular spot for a long time. It’s not a fancy office, but it’s where we belong. We just work hard, handle the pulses, and head home when the sun goes down.
