Being over at 51, opposite Board No 3 in Vatva Gidc, means we are right in the middle of everything. The industrial estate is always humming. If you come by, you’ll probably hear the neighbor's machines before you hear ours. We’ve been Vikrant Engineers for a while, and the place looks it. The walls have some stains, and the floor is scratched up from moving heavy parts around. It’s not a showroom. We do engineering work, the kind that involves a lot of grease and heat. Most days, we are just trying to keep up with the jobs that come in. The tea guy knows exactly when to show up. Vatva is a tough place to work sometimes, especially in the summer when it gets really hot inside the shed. We don’t have fancy air conditioning, just big fans that move the hot air around. We talk to the other guys in the neighboring units about parts or just the weather. It’s a community of sorts. No one here is trying to be corporate. We just wear our work clothes and get on with it. Sometimes a machine breaks down and we spend half the day fixing it ourselves. That’s just part of the deal. We keep our tools organized, or at least we try to. It's a practical way to live. We don't have much time for fluff. People bring us work, we do it, and then we move on to the next thing.
