Mahalaxmi Exports

Out here at 47, New Cloth Market, the atmosphere is always heavy with the smell of cotton and dye. Mahalaxmi Exports is situated right outside Raipur Gate, which is a busy part of the city to be in. We deal with a lot of fabric, so the space is always crowded with big bales wrapped in plastic. It’s a bit of a maze getting from the front door to the back desk without tripping over something. We don't have air conditioning, just a couple of old ceiling fans that whistle when they spin. In the summer, it gets pretty hot, but that’s just how Ahmedabad is. We’ve been part of this market for a long time and know almost everyone on this lane. Most of our day is spent checking the stock or talking to the guys who load the trucks. It’s a lot of physical work and my back usually aches by five o'clock. We don't have a website or anything like that because we prefer doing things the old way with hand-written ledgers. People know where to find us if they need cloth in bulk. We sometimes eat our lunch together on the floor when there’s a break in the deliveries. It’s not a polished business by any means, but we’ve been making it work for years. Just a typical day at Raipur Gate, keeping things moving along.
