Out here on Om Nagar Road, things stay pretty busy most of the week. We are right in the New Chawl area, near Asarwa Chakla. The shop is tucked into the Gokulchand Kasturchand building. It’s an old spot, and the walls could probably use a fresh coat of paint, but we never seem to find the time to actually do it. We have everything from fever pills to bags of flour piled up on the shelves. Sometimes the delivery truck blocks the whole road and the neighbors get a bit annoyed with the noise. I spend my mornings checking the dates on the milk and making sure the medicine bottles are lined up straight enough. It’s a lot of standing around and talking to people who live nearby. They come in for a single pack of shampoo or some aspirin. The floor gets scuffed from all the shoes coming in and out all day long. My back usually aches by five o'clock, but there is still work to do before we can close. The ceiling fan wobbles a little when it’s on high speed, which it always is during the summer. I know most of the kids around here by name because they come in for sweets after school. It’s a loud neighborhood with scooters zooming by and people shouting greetings to each other. Narendra Medical And Provision Stores is just a basic shop where we try to keep the shelves full. It’s not always organized perfectly, and sometimes it takes a minute to find what someone is looking for in the back room.
