I open up early at 39 Parasnagar Housing. The air in Ghatlodiya is still a bit cool then. I spend a lot of time just moving boxes of soap and cough syrup around so they fit on the wooden shelves. It’s a small space, really. People from Ward 3 stop by when they need something quick, like a bandage or maybe some biscuits for tea. Sometimes the fan makes a clicking sound that drives me a bit crazy, but I haven't fixed it yet. The floor is old tile, and it gets dusty fast with the door open to the street. I keep a ledger on the counter for the regular guys who pay at the end of the month. It’s not a fancy place at all. Most days are just sitting behind the counter waiting for the afternoon rush when school lets out and the parents come by. I usually have a radio playing low in the background, mostly news or old songs that I like. The neighbors come in just to talk about the weather or the traffic on the main road which seems to get worse every year. I’ve been here a long time now. My hands usually have a bit of ink on them from marking prices on the medicine packs with a marker. It gets hot in the afternoons, so I drink a lot of water and sit under the fan.
