If you head down the Fatehpur Sikri Road, you will eventually find us in Sahara Village within the Bichpuri Block. It’s quite a way out from the main city, so it stays a bit quieter here most of the time. We have been working in this area for several years now. The workshop is just a basic building where we keep our tools and the raw materials we get from the local markets. It’s a family thing, so you’ll usually see my uncle or my younger brother around the place. We do a lot of the work by hand, which means our fingers are always calloused and dirty. The dust from the road sometimes blows in when the wind is high, especially in the summer months. We don't really have a set routine, we just work until the job is done for the day. Sometimes we have a lot of orders and we stay until it’s dark, using a few old lamps to see what we are doing. The walk to the main road is short but can be muddy when it rains. We grew up around here so everyone knows what we do. It’s not a glamorous job, but it pays the bills and keeps us busy. We mostly focus on the handicrafts that people in this region have been making for generations. It feels right to keep that going in our little corner of Sahara Village.
