Upika Handloom

Upika Handloom is over at B-1/7 Community Centre in Janakpuri. It’s a bit of a quiet corner compared to the main roads. The shop is full of hand-woven fabrics, bedcovers, and curtains. Everything is made of cotton or wool, so there is always a bit of lint floating in the air. We have these large wooden tables where we spread out the cloth so people can see the patterns. The lighting isn't very bright, which makes the colors look a bit different depending on the time of day. Janakpuri is a nice neighborhood, and we have many regulars who have been coming to us for years. We usually open up around ten in the morning after the traffic has died down a bit. The floor is made of grey stone which stays cool even when it’s boiling hot outside. We have a small back room where we keep the extra stock in big cardboard boxes. Our ledger is a thick book with a red cover where we write down everything by hand. We don't use any fancy machines here. Sometimes the delivery truck comes late and we have to stay back to unload the heavy bundles of cloth. It’s a simple routine. We just keep the shelves filled and talk to the people who walk in. The Community Centre has a few other shops and a small park nearby. It's just a basic shop for home fabrics.
