Working in the DSIDC Packaging Complex in Kirti Nagar means you are always surrounded by the sounds of industry. There are trucks backing up, the screech of tape dispensers, and people shouting over the noise of machinery. Our unit, A-89, is right in the middle of it all. It is a big, open space that is mostly filled with boxes, crates, and packaging materials. The floor is concrete and there is always a bit of dust in the air, no matter how much we sweep. We do not have a proper office room, just a small partitioned area with a desk and a couple of chairs where we handle the paperwork. Most of our day is spent making sure the orders are packed right and the labels are stuck on straight. It is physical work and it can get quite hot in the afternoons when the sun hits the metal roof. We usually wear old clothes because everything gets dirty pretty fast. There is a small tea stall just outside the gate where we go when we need a break from the noise. It is not a place for visitors to come and sit comfortably. We are here to get the items ready and out the door as fast as we can. The smell of cardboard and plastic is what I associate with work every day. It is a bit messy and disorganized sometimes, but we always manage to find what the customer is looking for.
