Momin Fruit Shop

If you are walking near the Uttam Nagar Metro Terminal on Pankha Road, you will see our fruit shop. We are right there where everyone gets off the train and heads home. It is a very busy corner. We spend the whole day stacking crates of whatever fruit is in season. Right now, it is mostly mangoes and melons filling up the space. The noise from the metro overhead is something you just get used to after a few weeks. We get a lot of people stopping by on their way home from work to grab a kilo of something for their family. My brother and I take turns watching the stall throughout the day. We have to be here very early in the morning to get the best stuff from the big wholesale market. Then we spend a couple of hours cleaning the fruit and making it look decent on the wooden planks. It is hard work because you are on your feet all day long. Sometimes it rains and we have to scramble to pull the heavy plastic sheets over everything to keep it dry. The floor is often covered in straw and old wooden crates. We do not have a big store, just this open spot by the road. People know us for being regular and staying open late. Even when the metro is less crowded, we stay for the last few commuters. It is a simple trade. We talk to hundreds of people every day, mostly just about the prices and the seasons.
