Kalyani Hospital

Down here in Najaf Garh, things are always busy. Our hospital is right in the middle of it all. It’s a plain brick building that’s seen better days, but it does the job. I’ve lived in this neighborhood my whole life, so I know most of the people who walk through our doors. It’s not like those big city hospitals where everything is white and sterile. We’ve got some scuffs on the walls and the chairs in the lobby don't all match. But when someone is sick, they come here because they know we’re open. We spend a lot of time talking to patients about their families while we write out prescriptions. It’s just how we do things. Sometimes the electricity goes out and we have to switch over to the old generator, which is loud, but it keeps the lights on. We keep a stash of tea in the back for when the staff gets a break. It's a small place, really. Just a couple of wards and a consultation room. You won't find a lot of fancy machines here, but we take care of the basics. If someone has a fever or needs some stitches, they find us easily enough. We’re part of the street here. It’s noisy outside with the traffic, but inside we try to keep it calm enough to think.
