You can find Vijayalakshmi Tamarind Company over at Door No 4-2-90 in D B Colony. We are located right near the Shi Baba Temple, which makes it easy to give directions to anyone coming by for the first time. The smell of tamarind is everywhere in this building; it’s something you just get used to after a day or two. We spend a lot of time sorting through the produce, making sure things are packed up properly for transport. It’s a lot of manual work, sitting on the floor or at low tables, getting the seeds out and making sure the quality is okay. Some seasons are busier than others depending on the harvest, and during the peak times, we have extra hands in here just to keep up. The D B Colony area is usually pretty calm, but the temple nearby gets crowded on certain days, which makes the street outside a bit tight for the trucks. We’ve been doing this for a long time now. It’s a family-style environment where everyone knows each other’s business. We don't use any high-tech gadgets or complicated systems. It’s just about the tamarind and getting it ready to be sent out. The building is old and could probably use a fresh coat of paint, but it serves our purpose well enough. We just focus on the task at hand and try to stay organized. Most of the people working here have been neighbors for decades and we know each other well.
