Venki Pindi Girni

The sound of the grinding stones is the first thing you hear when you come near H. No -2-83/2 in Upparapally. Running a pindi girni means you’re always covered in a thin layer of white flour dust, no matter how much you try to brush it off. People from all over Chennaraopet bring their bags of rice, wheat, or chillies to get them ground down. It’s a loud place, and you have to talk loudly to be heard over the motor. The air is always a bit warm inside because the machines generate a lot of heat while they work. I’ve been doing this for a long time, and I can tell if the powder is right just by feeling it between my fingers. We don't have a big sign or any fancy posters on the walls. It’s just the mill, the scales, and some bags stacked in the corner. Sometimes the line gets long, especially during the festival seasons, and people just sit on the bench outside and chat while they wait. Warangal can get quite dusty on its own, so adding the flour mill to it makes for a very messy workplace, but it’s what we do. It’s a service that every household needs, and being right here in the village makes it easy for everyone to reach us. It's just simple, daily labor that helps the local families get their cooking done. I keep the motor oiled and the stones sharp, and that's enough to keep us going.
