Our place is over at 69, A.S.K. Thangaiah Road. It’s a busy street and you can usually hear the factory noise from outside if the doors are open. We’ve been making matches here for a long time now. Most days it’s just about getting the wood cut right and making sure the chemical dips for the tips are consistent. It’s hot work, especially in the summer months when the sun beats down on the roof and there isn't much of a breeze. The staff mostly lives nearby, so they walk or bike in early before the heat gets too bad. We don't have a fancy front office or anything like that for visitors. Just some desks and a lot of floor space for the machines. You see trucks pulling up all the time to load up the finished boxes to take them to the markets. There’s always dust in the air from the wood shavings, but that’s just how it is in this trade. We don’t spend much time on decorations or making things look pretty. It’s more about keeping the machines running so we don’t fall behind on our daily orders. Sometimes the power goes out and we all just sit outside and wait for it to come back on. It’s a simple life here on Thangaiah Road. The tea stall guy knows exactly how we like our drinks and brings them over twice a day. We aren't trying to change the world, just making sure people have a way to light their stoves.
