Tirupati Silks And Sarees is situated on the first floor at C. K. 15/52 in the Sudiya Bulanala area. It’s an old part of the city, and the building reflects that. To get to us, you have to walk up a flight of stairs that are a bit uneven and narrow. Once you’re inside, the whole place is filled with the colors of the silk. We don’t have a lot of room for people to walk around because the racks are so close together. Most of the time, we’re just sitting on the floor or the low benches, sorting through the new arrivals. Bulanala is a maze of lanes, and it can be quite a struggle to get deliveries in and out through the traffic. The air smells like incense from the little temple nearby and sometimes like the street food being cooked around the corner. We don't use a lot of fancy words to describe what we do here. We just open the shop, show the silk to whoever comes in, and hope the power doesn't cut out too often during the day. It’s a quiet kind of work compared to the noise of the main market. We’ve got a few old wooden cupboards where we keep the more expensive pieces wrapped in soft cloth. It’s not a modern showroom with glass walls. It’s just a place where we work every day, doing things the same way.
