Pandey General Stores sits right on Ashok Marg in Sarnath. If you live around this part of Varanasi, you probably know the spot already. It is a busy road, especially with people coming and going all day long. We keep the usual stuff on the wooden shelves, from snacks for the kids to household items for the kitchen. It is a family-run kind of thing, so you will usually see one of us sitting behind the counter or stacking boxes when a new delivery arrives. Sometimes the delivery truck blocks the narrow lane for a bit, which causes a little grumbling, but that is just how it is on this road. We do not have a fancy website or any corporate office. People just drop in when they need a lightbulb, some tea leaves, or a packet of biscuits. The shop floor is a bit small, so things are tucked away in every corner and up to the ceiling. It can get a little noisy outside with the traffic on Ashok Marg, but inside it is mostly just us chatting with the regulars about the local news. We have seen the neighborhood change a lot over the years, but the store stays pretty much the same. We open up in the morning and stay until the lights on the street come on. It is a steady routine that keeps us busy. The sidewalk outside is a bit uneven, so you have to watch your step.
