People in Varanasi know the name Lallu Surti because we have been in Sonarpura for a long time. This isn't one of those new supermarkets with bright lights. It’s a traditional place. We mostly deal with surti and related items, which is what we are known for in this part of Shivala. The smell of the tobacco is quite strong when you walk in, but we are used to it. My grandfather started this business, and we haven't changed much about how we do things. We have the same wooden counters and the old jars we’ve used for decades. It is a small shop on Gudhulia Road, and there is always someone standing outside talking. We get customers from all over the city who come specifically for our quality. We don't really have a big staff, just family members mostly. Sometimes the electricity goes out and we have to use a flashlight to find the right packets. It’s a bit slow-paced compared to the modern shops, but that’s how we like it. We know our regulars and what they usually want before they even ask. It is hard work staying open all day, especially in the heat, but it keeps the family going. Just a local spot that’s been part of the street for years and we hope to stay here.
