Fashion Silk House

You can find us at J. 14/90 in Qazi Sadullah Pura, right in the middle of Bari Bazar. It’s an old part of the city and it’s always crowded with people, carts, and rickshaws moving about. Our shop is basically packed from the floor to the ceiling with different kinds of silk. Sometimes it's hard to even walk through the narrow aisles because there are so many rolls of fabric sitting everywhere. It smells like old cloth and maybe a bit of dust, but that’s the way it’s always been for us. We’ve been here a very long time now. My father used to sit in this same spot forty years ago. We don't have any air conditioning that works all the time, so in the summer months it gets pretty hot inside. Customers come in and sit right on the floor while we show them different patterns and colors. It’s not a modern shopping mall experience at all. We know most of our regular customers by their first names and we know what their families are up to. There's no marketing team here, just us folding and unfolding fabric all day long. Sometimes we get a really beautiful piece of silk that we just want to look at for a bit before it gets sold. The light in the back of the shop isn't great, so we often take stuff to the front door to see the true colors in the sun. It is a simple life.
