Anoop Gen. Store

Anoop Gen. Store is situated on the Lanka Bhu Road in Varanasi. It’s a very specific part of Lanka, right on the way to the university. Being at 221005 means we see a lot of students and teachers every single day. The shop isn't much to look at from the outside, just a standard shutter and some crates of eggs stacked by the door. Inside, we have rows of biscuits, tea leaves, and spices. I spend a lot of time rearranging the packets because the kids always mess them up looking for a specific brand. The road outside is always being dug up for some pipe or wire, so it gets quite muddy when it rains. We have to keep a piece of cardboard at the entrance so people don't track mud all over the floor. I usually eat my lunch right there at the counter between customers. It’s a busy life but I like it. My father had a shop too, though not this one. I learned how to talk to people from him. You have to be patient when someone takes ten minutes to pick out a single bar of soap. We don't have any big sales or promotions. The price is what it is. People come here because they know we are always open and we have the basics. In the evenings, the street lights flicker but we keep our own bulb bright.
