A. K. Sarees

Madan Pura Road is where you will find us, right in the thick of things. The shop is A. K. Sarees and it’s basically just a place filled with stacks of fabric and boxes that we move around all day long. This road is always crowded, so there is constant noise from the bikes and carts passing by outside our door. We don't have fancy lights or a big showroom look, just shelves that go all the way to the ceiling. Most of the time, we are busy folding things back up after someone has looked through twenty different pieces. It gets dusty because of the road construction nearby, so we are always cleaning the glass counters. The fans stay on high because it gets quite warm in the afternoons here. We’ve been on Madan Pura Road for a long time, so we know most of the people who walk past every morning. Sometimes the delivery guys struggle to find a place to park their cycles out front. It’s a simple setup with a few stools for people to sit on while they look at the colors. We keep the ledger on the small wooden desk near the entrance. Nothing is too formal here. We just open up the shutters in the morning, sweep the floor, and start the day. It’s a lot of manual work, lifting heavy bundles and checking the threads, but it’s what we do for a living.
