If you ever find yourself in the village of Anandpur Kharauni, you might see the sign for Hatchery Ashutosh Protech (Opc) Private Limited. It is located at Raju Kumar Singh’s place. The post office is over in Baradaud, so we have to go there for any mail or paperwork. Running a hatchery means there is never a quiet moment. There is always the sound of chicks chirping and the hum of the incubators going in the background. It gets pretty warm inside because of the equipment, but you get used to it after a few hours. Raju is usually around, keeping an eye on everything and making sure the eggs are handled right. We do not use any big fancy machines for the day-to-day stuff; mostly it’s just hands-on work. The village life is slow, but the work here is anything but. People from around the area stop by often. We keep the place tidy, though with hundreds of birds, it is a constant battle against the feathers and dust. It is just a small local operation where we focus on the birds and the eggs. Some nights we stay up late checking on things, just to be sure. It is honest work and we take it one day at a time here in the village. It’s nothing like those big corporate farms you see on TV, just us in Anandpur Kharauni doing our bit.
