If you drive down Ajwa Road and look for number 538, you will find our gate. We handle trailers and big vehicles. It is a large open space because you need a lot of room to move those things around without hitting anything. The ground is hard-packed dirt and gravel that gets kicked up whenever a truck pulls in. We spend our time looking under chassis and checking tires for wear and tear. These big Tata trailers take a lot of looking after to keep them on the road. The sun beats down on the yard all day, making the metal parts too hot to touch sometimes. We have a small shed where we keep the paperwork and a few benches to sit on during breaks. It’s a simple setup on Ajwa Road. There’s no lobby or air conditioning here for us. We just deal with the drivers who are passing through or the local guys who need some maintenance done. Often, we are covered in black soot and grime by the end of the shift. It’s the kind of job where you are always washing your hands but they never stay clean for long. We’ve seen all kinds of trailers come through here over the years. Some are in good shape and some are barely holding together. We just do what needs to be done to keep them moving along the highway.
