Down here on the Savli-Samlaya Road, things move at their own pace. We are near the old Samlaya Post Office in the Pratapnagar area. It is a bit of a trek for some, but it is where we have set up shop. The cement business isn't glamorous. You are always covered in a bit of white powder, and the boots do not stay clean for more than five minutes. We spend the mornings checking the machinery and making sure the bags are filled right. The conveyors make this rhythmic clanking sound that you start to hear even when you are at home trying to sleep. We have a small crew, mostly local folks from Savli who know the area well. The trucks come in from the main road and we get them loaded up as fast as we can. It is a lot of standing around waiting, then a lot of rushing all at once. We do not bother with fancy uniforms or big meetings. We just talk over the noise of the engines. Sometimes the cows wander onto the road and slow everything down, but that is just life around here. We handle the maintenance ourselves when we can. It is dusty and it is heavy work, but it pays the bills and keeps us busy. We just focus on getting the stacks ready for the next day. It is just another day at the site for us. We do our work and go home when the sun sets.
