Veer Leather Art And Craft

We are over at Maji House in Udaipur, right at Lal Ghat. It’s very close to Hotel Udaigarh and Jagdish Chowk, which is a very famous part of the old city. Veer Leather Art And Craft is basically a small workshop and shop combined. You can hear the temple bells from where we sit. We work with a lot of local leather, making bags and journals and small crafts. The smell of the leather is everywhere in the room. It’s a bit of a climb up the narrow streets to get to us, especially when the cows are blocking the way. We spend our time cutting leather and stitching things by hand. Sometimes tourists wander in after visiting the lake or the temple. We show them what we are making and sometimes they buy something. It’s a very relaxed way to work. The walls of Maji House are thick, so it stays relatively cool even when the Rajasthan sun is beating down outside. We don't have a big team, just a few of us who know the craft. We use simple tools that have been around for years. Most evenings we just sit outside and watch the sunset over the roofs. It’s a good place to be if you like working with your hands. We just keep making our leather pieces one by one. It’s a steady pace and we don't rush things.
