Lake City Engineering Works

Out in Sukher Ria Udhyog Vihar, the air smells like cut metal and machine oil. Lake City Engineering Works is one of those places where the floor is always covered in a bit of iron dust. We have these big lathes and milling machines that have been running for a long time. They make a steady rhythmic sound that you get used to after a while. Most of the work involves taking a piece of raw steel and turning it into something useful for a factory or a repair job. The light comes in through the high windows, showing the smoke from the welding area in the corner. We don't have a receptionist or anything like that. Usually, you’ll find someone with greasy hands looking over a blueprint or a hand-drawn sketch a customer brought in. It’s a practical space. There are stacks of scrap metal near the door and heavy tools hanging on the walls where they’ve been for years. Sometimes the machines need a bit of a kick or some extra oil to keep going, but they do the job. The guys here wear thick boots and don't talk much while they are focused on the measurements. It’s about getting the dimensions right so the parts fit together. It’s just how things go in this part of the industrial area, day in and day out.
