Up here at Main Chopaiti in Kankroli, our shop is always humming with the sound of tools. We’ve been Sharma Engineering for quite some time now, and the locals know where to find us. It’s a gritty kind of place with oil on the floor and metal shavings in the corners. We don't have a receptionist or a waiting room; if you come by, you just walk in and find one of us working on a lathe or welding something together. The heat from the machines makes the shop pretty warm, especially in the summer months. We handle all sorts of repair jobs and custom metal work that people bring in. Sometimes it’s a broken part from a tractor, other times it’s something for a local building project. We don’t use a lot of fancy computer systems for our work; mostly it’s just measuring by hand and knowing how the metal behaves. The neighborhood is lively, with a lot of foot traffic near the Chopaiti. We usually have the radio playing in the background, though you can barely hear it over the grinding. It’s a practical way to earn a living. We like the fact that we can fix things that other people might just throw away. Most of the guys here have calluses on their hands and grease under their fingernails. That’s just the way engineering goes when you’re doing it for real. We aren't doing anything fancy, just keeping the equipment running.
