Shanti Garments

Down here at No. 102 in Tharakadu, near the end of Murungapalayam 3rd Street, is where we do all our garment work. It’s right near Gandhi Nagar and the whole area is always full of the sound of sewing machines. We have been in this spot for quite some time now. The building is older and the stairs are a bit narrow, but it’s our home. Every day we have stacks of fabric coming in and finished pieces going out in big bundles. It’s a lot of manual work and our hands are usually tired by the end of the shift. We have a group of tailors and cutters who are very fast, and they’ve been with us through the good times and the slow times. We don’t have a website or any of that stuff; we just deal with the people who come to our door or call us on the phone. Sometimes the power goes out in this part of town and we all just sit outside and wait for it to come back on. It’s a simple life. We make sure the stitching is right and the colors match what was asked for. There are always scrap pieces of thread all over the floor, and we spend the last half hour of every day just cleaning up the mess from the work. It’s just how we live.
