M.K.B.Nursery & Primary School

Our little school is located on the Main Road in Puliyara, which is a bit of a distance out in Tirunelveli. It’s a nursery and primary school, so we mostly see the very young kids from the surrounding homes. The building is pretty basic, just a few rooms where the children sit on their mats or benches to learn. We have a small gate out front to keep the kids from running out onto the main road, which can get a bit busy with trucks passing through. There’s a lot of singing and counting going on throughout the morning. It’s the kind of place where the teachers know every student’s parents and probably their grandparents too. We don’t have any of those high-tech gadgets you see in city schools; we use blackboards and chalk and lots of hand-drawn posters. The yard gets a bit muddy when it rains, so we spend a lot of time telling the kids to wipe their feet before coming inside. It’s a simple life here, just focusing on teaching the basics like reading and writing. The staff is local, and we all just pitch in with whatever needs doing, whether it’s fixing a broken chair or organizing the Republic Day program. It’s a small, honest school that has been part of the Puliyara landscape for years now, providing a place for the little ones to start their education without having to travel too far from home.
