K.A.M. Rice & Flour Mill

Out here in Kundukad, things move a little slower than they do in the city. Our mill is located in Thonipadam, near the Vavullivapuram post office area. Most people around here know the sound of the machines running throughout the morning. We deal with rice and flour mostly. It’s hard work and the air always smells like grain, which I suppose is better than many other smells you find in town. We have been in this spot for quite some time now. Neighbors bring their heavy bags over and we get to work on them. It is very loud inside when the grinding starts, so we don't talk much while the machines are on. There is a lot of lifting involved every day. We move heavy sacks from the trucks to the floor and then back again once they are done. The floor is usually covered in a fine layer of white powder by the afternoon. It’s just how it is in a mill like this. We try to keep things moving so nobody has to wait too long out in the sun. Sometimes the queue gets pretty long in the early mornings when everyone arrives at once. You can find us easily if you follow the road toward the post office. We aren't a big corporation or anything fancy. Just a local mill where we do the daily grinding for the families around Thonipadam. It’s a simple life and we stay busy with the harvest seasons especially when everyone has grain.
