I usually get here before the sun is even up. The milk trucks arrive early and we have to get everything inside before it starts getting warm out. Our shop, Vijay Dairy And Sweet Mart, is located in Tal Olpad at Matru Smruti 41369. It is a simple place, nothing like those big supermarkets you see in the city. We have our big metal cans and the refrigerators that never seem to stop humming. Throughout the day, people from the neighborhood pop in for a pouch of milk or maybe some fresh curd for their lunch. When the festivals come around, we are much busier. That is when we spend all our time making sweets. The smell of boiling milk and sugar fills up the whole street. My clothes always smell like cardamom and ghee. We don't have a fancy display, just some glass cases that we try to keep clean. Sometimes the floors get a bit slippery from the water and ice, but we sweep it out when we can. It’s just me and a couple of boys helping with the heavy lifting. We know most of the people who come here by their first names. They don’t come for a fancy experience, they just want something fresh that tastes like home. We stay open until the last of the milk is gone or it gets too late to keep the lights on and lock the door.
