You can find us at Shop No. 286 in Ghanshyam Nagar. This is right on Varachha Road, which everyone knows is one of the busiest parts of Surat. The 395006 area is always full of people and bikes. Shivam Hair Style is tucked into the line of shops there. It gets very loud outside with all the horns and people shouting, but we are used to it by now. The shop is small and we have to be careful not to bump into each other when there are three customers at once. We don't have a lot of room for waiting, so people often stand outside on the pavement. We keep the radio on most of the day to drown out the traffic. The floor is tile and it’s stained from years of use. We don't mind. We do a lot of simple cuts and shaves. Varachha Road is a place where people are always in a hurry, so we try to work fast. We don't use any fancy products, just the basic stuff from the local market. My hands are usually covered in water or hair. It's a tough way to make a living but we have many regulars who come every month. We know their names and how they like their hair. That's the best part of being in Ghanshyam Nagar. We are just a small part of this big, busy and noisy city.
