New Khodiyar Dairy And General Store is at 142, Shop No 1 in the Laxminarayan Society 1, right on Dharati Nagar Road in Surat. We do a mix of things here, but dairy is a big part of it. The morning starts very early, around 5:30 am, when the milk van arrives. I have to get all those pouches into the crates and sorted before the neighborhood wakes up. Surat is a city that loves its food, so we also keep a lot of snacks and general groceries. The shop is on A K Road, which is always busy with people going to work. We have these large glass jars filled with different kinds of biscuits and sweets that the kids love. The counter is always a bit cluttered with small change and a stack of newspapers. I do not have many employees, maybe just a young lad to help carry the heavy stuff. We spend a lot of time cleaning the dairy fridge because it has to stay clean. It gets pretty humid here, so we try to keep the shop well-ventilated. People come in and ask for their usual milk order without even saying the name. We know most of the families in the society quite well. It is just about being there every morning and making sure we have the basics like butter, bread, and curd ready for everyone’s breakfast. The traffic outside never seems to stop, but inside it is just us working quietly.
