Our unit is number 35 in the Balaji Industry area, right by the Navjivan Circle. You have to travel down the Udhna-Magdalla Road to find where we are located. It is an industrial part of the city, so there are always trucks moving and the sound of machinery coming from almost every building. We work with jari, which is the metallic thread used for traditional clothes. It is a very specific type of work that needs a lot of attention. The machines we use are quite old but they still run well as long as we take good care of them. The air inside the unit often has a faint metallic smell. We have a small group of workers who have been here for many years. They know the rhythm of the machines by heart and can tell if something is wrong just by the sound. We do not have air conditioning, only some large fans that move the air around when it gets too hot. Being near Navjivan Circle is good because it is a central landmark that everyone knows. We spend our days watching the threads spin and making sure nothing gets tangled up. It is repetitive work but there is a satisfaction in seeing the finished spools ready for the market. We do not do any big advertising; people find us because we have been in Balaji Industry for so long. It is just our daily life on Udhna-Magdalla Road.
