About Shri Vikas Beej Bhandar – Agriculture & Farming in South Delhi
It is usually pretty quiet on Birbal Road when we first get here in the mornings. We haul up the metal shutters and there is that specific smell of dry seeds and jute bags that just stays in the air. This shop in Jangpura Extn. has been our spot for a long time. It is not a fancy place by any means. We have got old wooden counters that have seen better days and stacks of paper registers that we still use because the computer sometimes acts up when the weather gets too hot. Most of the day is just spent talking to folks who come in looking for something specific for their patch of land or a bigger project they are working on. We do not have a big showroom or anything, just rows of shelves and heavy bags sitting on the floor. Sometimes the delivery trucks block the narrow lane and the neighbors get a bit annoyed, so we have to move things quickly. My desk is tucked in the corner behind a pile of old catalogs. We usually drink tea twice a day from the stall down the street, and that is when we get most of our thinking done. It is simple work, really. We just keep track of what is in the back and make sure we do not run out of the basics when the season changes. You mostly hear the sound of the ceiling fan and the traffic from the main road. It is a small space, but we make it work.
