Our little shop is at C-1/113 in Lajpat Nagar, Part-I. If you know anything about Lajpat Nagar, you know how crowded and lively it gets. At Hand Tex, we’re right in the middle of all that energy. We deal mostly with textiles, so the place is packed with rolls of cloth and different kinds of thread. It’s hard to move around sometimes because we’ve squeezed so much stock into the space. We spend our days measuring out lengths of fabric and talking to customers who are looking for something specific. The noise from the street is constant—horns, people shouting, and the general bustle of the market. We don’t have a big fancy office; it’s just us behind a counter with a lot of stuff piled up behind us. Sometimes the light bulbs flicker and we have to give them a tap to keep them going. We’re just a small outfit trying to keep up with the demand and making sure we have enough of the popular colors in stock. It’s not a corporate environment at all. We know our regulars by name and we usually have a cup of chai sitting somewhere on a stack of fabric. It’s a busy, cramped, and noisy way to work, but we’ve been doing it this way for a long time now. We just stay focused on the fabric and getting through the daily rush.
