About Hand Crafted Fabrics – Textile in South Delhi
Lajpat Nagar is always a bit chaotic, especially around Part-IV where we are located. Our shop, Hand Crafted Fabrics, is in one of those old double-story buildings at K-23. You can tell the building has been there for a long time by the way the stairs are worn down and the walls look. Inside, we have stacks and stacks of fabric. Some are high up on the top shelves where you need a ladder to reach them, and others are just piled on the floor because we ran out of room. It smells like fresh cotton and a bit of dust in here. Most of our day is spent unrolling these big bolts of cloth for people to see the patterns. Sometimes the patterns don't look exactly like the last batch, but that is just how it goes with handmade things. We have a small corner where we keep the heavy scissors and measuring tapes. It’s usually a mess of loose threads by noon. The neighbors around here are mostly other shops, so we see the same delivery guys every day. We usually have tea brought in from the stall down the street twice a day. It’s a busy life in Lajpat Nagar, and our little space in the old double story is just part of it. We don't really do anything fancy with the window display. We just put out what we think looks decent. It’s a practical way to run things.
