Hindustan Steel, Solapur, (Tata Steel)

Down here on Bijapur Road in Solapur, you’ll find us tucked away in Millat Nagar. We are right behind the Nadgiri Petrol Pump, which is usually the easiest way to tell people how to find our gate. Hindustan Steel has been here for a good bit, handling mostly Tata Steel products for the local market. It’s a busy spot, especially with the trucks coming off the main road. The sun gets really hot in Solapur, so we spend a lot of our time under the shade of the main shed. We handle a lot of different sizes of steel, mostly for housing and some local infrastructure stuff. My desk is usually covered in receipts and delivery notes. We don't have a lot of staff, just a few of us who know the inventory inside out. If someone comes in looking for a specific gauge, we usually know exactly which pile it’s in. Dealing with Tata products means we have to stay on top of our stock levels because it moves pretty quick. We try to keep things simple. No one here wears a suit, that’s for sure. It’s all about getting the work done and making sure the customers get their loads on time. Sometimes the electricity goes out and we have to do everything by hand, but that’s just how it goes sometimes. We’ve grown used to the noise and the grit of the yard over the years.
