If you are driving along National Highway 31 in Matigara, you will pass right by St Josephs School. Being in Siliguri, we get that nice mountain air sometimes, though the highway traffic brings plenty of dust too. The school has a big gate and a yard where everyone gathers. It is a pretty simple setup. We have the main building with all the classrooms and the administrative bits where we handle the fees and the paperwork. Working here means getting used to the rhythm of the school bell and the sound of rain on the roof during the monsoon months. The staff is a mix of people who have been here forever and a few newer faces. We don't go in for anything too corporate; we just focus on making sure the kids have their books and the teachers have their markers. Sometimes the playground gets a bit muddy, and we have to tell the kids to watch their shoes. It is a very local kind of place. We know the shopkeepers nearby and the people who live in the Matigara area. There is a lot of routine involved in what we do, from the morning assembly to the final bell at the end of the day. It’s just a school where people come to do their bit, and we try to keep things as uncomplicated as possible for the parents and the children who walk through our doors.
