Up here in Shimla, we work out of Sharmaniwas in the Engineghar area of Sanjauli. Living and working in the mountains is different from the plains. You have to walk a lot of stairs and deal with the cold for several months of the year. Our office for Ambuja Cement is just a practical space where we track the supply of cement bags coming into the hills. The view outside is nice, but we’re usually too busy with the ledgers to look out the window much. Trucks have a hard time on these winding roads, especially when it snows, so we spend a lot of time on the phone checking where everyone is. The office has a heater that we keep close to our feet during the winter. We have a few wooden shelves filled with records and some old chairs for when the drivers come in to settle their papers. It’s a simple setup. Sanjauli is a crowded part of Shimla, so there’s always a lot of movement around Engineghar. We aren't doing anything fancy here, just making sure the construction projects in the district get what they need. People around here know the house name, Sharmaniwas. It’s a local operation, run by people who live in these hills. We drink a lot of hot chai to keep going. It’s a steady life, even with the steep climbs and the thin air.
