Ajivam School is right here in Sikh Village, at Plot 36A. If you walk down the lane near 1-1-336/79, you’ll see our gate. It’s a busy little spot in the mornings with parents dropping off their kids. The sun hits the front of the building early on. We have the classrooms set up simply. Nothing fancy. Just desks, chairs, and blackboards that always need a good wipe. You can hear the kids reciting their lessons all the way from the street sometimes. It gets loud during the break when everyone runs out to the small open area. We’ve been here in Hyderabad for a while now. The walls are painted a plain color, and there are posters of the alphabet and numbers pinned up where they’ve started to peel a bit at the corners. The staff room is small, just enough for a few chairs and the registers we keep. We spend a lot of time making sure the registers are updated by hand. The ceiling fans make that rhythmic clicking sound in the summer heat. In the afternoon, the auto-rickshaws line up outside, and the drivers wait in the shade of the trees nearby. It’s a regular routine day after day. We just keep things moving, making sure the kids have their books and the water cans are filled up. It feels like a part of the neighborhood, just a local place where children come to learn their basics and then head home for lunch.
