Our shop is Shafiq Ahmad & Sons and you can find us right in the middle of Shopuri Mandi. It’s a family thing that started quite a long time ago. My sons are here with me most days helping out with the heavy lifting and talking to the folks who stop by. The market is always loud and there’s always someone shouting about a truck blocking the way. We’ve grown used to the noise over the years. We handle all sorts of things here and the inventory changes depending on what’s available. It’s a lot of manual work. We don’t use much technology besides an old calculator and a ledger that’s seen better days. Every morning we open up the shutters and sweep the front. The floor is concrete and it stays cool even when it’s hot outside. Sometimes we sit on the wooden stools out front when things get quiet for a minute. Most people know my family because we’ve stayed in the same spot for so long. We don’t really bother with advertisements or big signs. People find us because they know where we are. It’s just honest work day in and day out. We take care of the orders as they come and try to get home before it gets too dark. Shopuri Mandi is a tough place to work but it’s our home and we like it here.
