Rohan Ratnagiri Organic Mangoes is based out here in Khalgaon, Jakadevi. We’re over at Niwaiwadi, specifically at 831, near where Sushil Gangaram Desai stays. It’s a quiet place most of the time, until the mango season starts. That's when things get really busy around here. We have been doing this organic mango thing for a while now. We don't use any of those harsh chemicals you hear about because we live right here on the land. It wouldn't make sense to mess up the soil where we work every day. The trees have been in the ground for years and they need a lot of attention. We spend most of our mornings checking the fruit and making sure the water is right. When the mangoes are ready, we pick them ourselves by hand. Sometimes the weather doesn't help us much, but that is just how farming goes. You can't really control the rain or the heat. We just do the best we can with what we have. It’s a family-run kind of setup, so everyone chips in when it’s time to harvest. People around the Jakadevi area know where we are if they need to stop by and talk. We aren't some big corporation with fancy offices and receptionists. Our office is basically where the trees are or at the house. If you come by Khalgaon, you will see the orchards and probably some of us working out there. It’s honest work and we like it that way. We're just trying to keep the tradition going while keeping the land healthy for whoever comes after us. It takes a lot of patience, but the taste of a real mango makes it worth it.
