Tata Steel Ltd

Working in the Welfare Department for Tata Steel Ltd over in the West Bokaro Division is a specific kind of job. We are based out of Ghatotand in the Ramgarh district. It’s a hilly area of Jharkhand, and you can really feel the mining atmosphere all around us. The office isn't anything special to look at. It's functional, built to last, and usually covered in a bit of coal dust if the wind is blowing the wrong way. We deal with the day-to-day needs of the workers and the local community. It’s a lot of talking to people and filling out forms. The building is older, with heavy doors and windows that sometimes stick. We have a lot of people coming in and out all day, so the floors are rarely clean for long. We don't have a fancy waiting room, just some wooden benches. The staff here has been around for a long time, so we all know how the machines work and when the water is going to be cut off. It’s a very practical environment. We don't use much corporate jargon because it doesn't help anyone here. We just try to solve problems as they come up. When the shift ends, we usually head home to the nearby colonies. It's a tough but honest way to earn a living in this part of Jharkhand. Ghatotand is a small place, but there is always something to do.
