If you know where the Dagdusheth Halwai Ganpati temple is, then you have probably walked right past us. Deccan Leather Works is at 261 Budhwar Peth. It is a very old part of the city. The streets are narrow and always full of people, especially during festivals. Our shop is small, but we pack a lot into it. We work with leather mostly. There is a specific smell of treated hides that hits you as soon as you step inside. It is a smell I have grown up with. The building we are in is quite old too. You can see it in the walls and the ceiling. We do a lot of custom work and repairs. People bring in their old belts or bags that have fallen apart, and we see what we can do. It isn’t always easy, but we have the tools for it. Sometimes the power goes out in this area, so we keep some lanterns handy. We don’t have a website or a fancy sign. Most folks find us just by walking through the market. We sit on small stools most of the day, working with our hands. It is a quiet life despite being in such a busy neighborhood. We have been here a long time and plan to stay as long as people still need leather fixed. It’s just a traditional shop doing what we know how to do best.
