Ashish Fishries

Ashish Fishries is based in Village- Jawar, over in Subhashnagar, Gujarat. We spend most of our time near the water. Whether it is the ponds or dealing with the catch from the coast, fish is our whole life. The air here always has that salty, fishy smell that you never really get out of your clothes. It is a small village operation. We do not have a big fleet or anything like that. It is mostly about knowing the seasons and what the water is doing. We start our work when most people are still sleeping. Checking the nets or sorting the morning's haul takes up most of our energy. We sell mostly to local markets and people we have known for years. It is a bit of a gamble sometimes, depending on the weather and the catch. Some days we have more than we can handle, and other days it is very quiet. We do not use much technology. We just rely on what we have learned over the years. The village of Jawar is a quiet place, and we like it that way. We have a small shed where we keep our gear and do the sorting. It is messy work and your hands are always wet. But it is the life we chose. We are not looking to expand or become a big company. We just want to keep doing what we are doing and provide for our families. It is a simple cycle that repeats every single day.
