We spend most of our time here at 862/3 Botlan Wali Gali. If you know Jajia Mohalla in Patiala, you know it is a busy spot. Our space is filled with the smell of leather and the sound of hammers hitting nails. It is not a big fancy factory or anything like that. Just some chairs, a lot of thread, and pieces of hide waiting to be cut. My hands are usually stained with a bit of dye by the end of the afternoon. We started doing this because it is what we know. The street outside is narrow so things get cramped when a bike tries to pass by. Sometimes the tea guy comes by and we take a break on the steps. People stop in to ask about a pair of shoes they saw last week. We don't have a big front office or someone to answer phones all day. If we are working, we are at the bench. Patiala 147001 is where we live and where we work. It’s been that way for a good while now. The fans hum overhead but it still gets warm in the summer months. We just keep our heads down and finish the stitching. Sometimes a needle breaks and we have to hunt for another one in the drawers. It is just a normal day at the shop. We don't have a website or fancy catalogs. Most customers just find us by walking down the street. It’s simple work but we stay busy.
