Mamas Rasoi sits right on the Dalhousie Highway, specifically at the 67 Mile Stone in Village Bungal. It is a bit of a drive from the main part of Pathankot, but being on the highway means we see a lot of travelers. We get trucks, cars, and buses stopping by all day and night. The view around the village is actually quite nice, though most people are just looking for a place to stretch their legs. The kitchen is the heart of the place. We have big stoves and large pots because we have to cook in big batches for the hungry people coming off the road. It is often quite windy out here, and you can hear the vehicles zooming past at high speeds. We do not have a fancy dining hall. It is just a simple space with sturdy tables that can handle a lot of use. My family helps out with the cooking and serving. We usually have a big pot of tea going at all times because that is what everyone asks for first. The work is constant because the highway never really sleeps. We take turns resting while someone stays near the front. We do not have a printed menu that stays the same; we just make what is fresh and available in the village market. It is a simple life out here by the 67 Mile Stone, just keeping the fire going and watching the traffic pass by.
