Sardar Patel Nagar is where we spend all our days, right across from the New Fatak. If you know where Kamal Vidhya Mandir School is, then you have probably seen our place. It is a dusty business, dealing with cement all day. The bags are heavy and they leave a grey film on everything, including the chairs and the desk. When the trains go by the fatak, the whole floor shakes a little bit. We usually start quite early before the school kids start arriving and the road gets blocked up with cycles and rickshaws. It's a lot of loading and unloading. Some days the laborers are fast, and other days we’re just waiting around for the next truck to pull in. We don't have a big office, just a small space to sit and handle the paperwork. The walls could probably use a fresh coat of paint, but it feels like a waste since more dust just comes in the next day. Sometimes people stop by asking for directions because of the school nearby. We just point them the right way and get back to the bags. It’s hard work, and my back usually hurts by the time we close up at night. There’s no air conditioning, just a ceiling fan that makes a clicking noise. It's just a regular yard for cement, nothing more to it than that. People just come by when they are building something and need a few bags.
