We are tucked away in Katra Bariyan, which is part of the old Chandni Chowk area. Our address is 104, right in the heart of Katra Tobacco. If you know Delhi, you know how crowded and tight these lanes can be. Our family has been in this spot for a very long time. The building is old with high ceilings and thick walls that stay a bit cooler in the summer. We deal with the trade that has been here for generations. There is always a smell of tobacco and old paper in the air. Most days involve sitting on the floor or at low desks while we talk to customers. It’s not a modern office with computers everywhere. We still use some of the old ways of doing things because they work for us. The lanes are so narrow that you can't bring a car in, so everything comes in on handcarts. It’s a lot of noise and shouting outside, but inside it’s a bit calmer. We drink a lot of tea and talk to the other shopkeepers in the Katra. We don't do much advertising. People know where we are. It’s a very traditional way of working. We handle the daily business as it comes and we don't worry too much about the rest of the world. It’s just how life is in the old city. We keep the doors open and wait for the regulars to stop by.
