Old Lajpat Rai Market is one of those places that never really goes quiet, and our shop at number 627 is right in the thick of it. Fair Deal Leather Works has been around since before the market became as crowded as it is today. When you walk in, the first thing you notice is the heavy smell of treated hides and the sound of the old sewing machines running. We do a lot of different things with leather, from fixing old bags that have seen better days to making things from scratch for customers who want something durable. It is a dusty job, and our hands are usually stained with dye or oil by the end of the day. We don't have a big fancy showroom; the walls are mostly covered with tools, thread, and scraps of material we might need later. Customers come in looking for something specific, or they bring in a favorite jacket with a broken zipper. We take a look, tell them what can be done, and give them a price. It is honest work. The market can be overwhelming for people who aren't used to the narrow lanes and the constant shouting of loaders, but for us, it is just home. We keep our heads down and focus on the stitching. If a job isn't done right, we just stay until we fix it. That is how we have kept the shop going all these years in this corner of Delhi.
