Biswas Stones

Working out in Madhyamgram means you get used to a lot of dust on your shoes. Here at Biswas Stones, the yard is always full of heavy slabs of rock. We spend most of our daylight hours moving things around and checking what we have left in stock. It is definitely not a quiet job. The sound of the saws cutting through stone is just the background music for us. Sometimes the air gets so thick with that white stone powder that you can barely see the gate. We wear our oldest clothes to work because there is no point trying to stay clean here. The sun hits the open yard really hard in the middle of the day. We have a small tin shed where we can sit for a few minutes to get out of the heat. Madhyamgram has grown a lot lately, and the roads are much busier than they used to be. But inside the yard, the work stays pretty much the same as it always was. We don't use big words or have meetings. It is mostly just a lot of nodding and getting on with the lifting. Some days go by very slowly, and other days the trucks arrive all at once and we are busy until late. We try to finish up before the sun goes down completely. The yard feels very different when it’s quiet. It is just a local spot doing its thing.
